I have selected five documentaries which resonated with me and were warmly embraced by the Palace Cinemas audience. I found each one of these films fascinating and a great snapshot of contemporary pop culture. From local heroes MIDNIGHT OIL, international stars OASIS to fashion icons ANNA WINTOUR and photographer BILL CUNNINGHAM, these documentaries showcase their brilliance, creativity and passion.
Midnight Oil 1984
Midnight Oil released their iconic record Red Sails in the Sunset in 1984 and embarked on a national tour performing raw and electrifying music that reignited the imagination of young Australians. That same year, their lead singer Peter Garrett committed to run for a Senate seat for the Nuclear Disarmament Party. With the mounting pressure of balancing the demands of music and politics this is the year that would make, but nearly break, Australia's most important rock and roll band.
Searching for Sugarman
Searching for Sugar Man tells the incredible true story of Rodriguez and two South Africans who set out to discover what happened to their unlikely musical hero, the mysterious 1970s musician who somehow disappeared into obscurity…or did he?
Oasis Supersonic
This is the story of one of the UK’s biggest bands, told in all their intense and volatile glory, also drawing from rare, unseen material and exclusive interviews with Noel and Liam Gallagher, their mother, members of the band and their road crew. The documentary takes a no holds barred approach to the turbulent relationship between the two Gallagher brothers.
Bill Cunningham’s New York
A riveting documentary on BILL CUNNINGHAM who rode his bicycle through New York attending as many as 20 gala events a week and photographing celebrities for the New York Times. His company was sought by the world’s rich and powerful and yet he remained such a gentle and humble icon of New York society.
The September Issue
A fascinating documentary on American Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and her staff focusing on all the behind the scenes drama whilst they are preparing for the production of the September 2007 issue of American Vogue Magazine.
